Workshops: Call for Participation

Extended deadline for Workshop proposals at Mobile HCI!
New deadline: February 8th.

Are you working in an emerging area in MobileHCI? Please consider organizing a workshop! Workshops allow members of a community to meet in the context of a focused and interactive discussion. Arranging a workshop is an opportunity to move the field forward and to build a community. MobileHCI workshops might address basic research, applied research, HCI practice, new methodologies, emerging application areas, design innovations, management and organizational issues, or HCI education. Each workshop should generate ideas that give the MobileHCI community a new, organized way of thinking about the topic, or ideas that suggest promising directions for future research. Some workshops result in edited books or special issues of journals; you may consider including this goal in the design of your workshop.

Workshop organisers

Workshops will be held on August 30. Two workshop formats will be available: half-day and full-day. Half-day workshops should be scheduled to use 3 working hours, with one break. Full-day workshops should be scheduled to use 6 working hours, with a mid-morning break, a lunch break, and a mid-afternoon break. Workshops typically have 15 to 20 participants. Focused interaction among participants is important, so participants must have informed positions based on prior experience.

Workshop organisers submit a workshop proposal to the MobileHCI conference. The proposals are reviewed and are either accepted or rejected. If a workshop is accepted, the workshop is publicised by both MobileHCI conference and the workshop organisers.

Workshop participants

Workshop participants submit papers to the workshop, that are reviewed by the workshop organisers who decide on the final list of workshop participants. Workshops are only open to people who have had their paper accepted by the workshop organisers, and who have registered for both the workshop and the MobileHCI conference. The MobileHCI program committee suggests April 8th, 2011 as a deadline for papers and May 15th, 2011 as a deadline for notification of acceptance.

Workshop proposals

The workshop proposal must have the following, three distinct sections, all written in the MobileHCI 2011Extended Abstracts Format: a proposal, a call for participation and a cover sheet. These documents should all be submitted in one file. The combined file must be in PDF format.

Part 1. Cover Sheet

Each submission should have a cover sheet giving contact information for the primary workshop organiser. This person will serve as the main point of contact with the Workshop Chairs.

Part 2. Proposal

Prepare a proposal for the Workshops review committee. The proposal should not exceed 3 pages. The proposal must describe the topic, a detailed plan for conducting the workshop (before, during, and after), and the organisers’ backgrounds.

Part 3. Call for Participation

Prepare a 250-word Call for Participation suitable for publication on the MobileHCI2011 web site. It should describe the format and goals of the workshop, the participant selection criteria, requirements for papers (e.g. page length, topics to address, etc), where these papers should be submitted, and the fact that at least one author of accepted papers needs to register for the workshop and for the conference itself. Organisers are encouraged to develop an external web page with additional information about the workshop for potential participants.

Review criteria include the workshop’s potential for generating stimulating discussions and useful results; the expected community interest level in the topic; the organisers’ ability to demonstrate in the proposal a well-organized process and plan for the workshop; the review criteria adopted for accepting workshop papers (with a peer-review process being preferred); and the overall balance of topics in the Workshops program. If multiple submissions are received on the same or similar topics, the organisers may be encouraged to merge them.

Organisers are expected to:

  • Publicise their workshop: organisers of an accepted workshop are encouraged to set up and maintain locally a web page in which they provide further and updated information about their workshop. The local page of the workshop will be reachable from the official MobileHCI workshop site.
  • Solicit papers from potential participants: A workshop paper is generally 2-4 pages long and outlines the submitter’s view on the workshop theme and the reasons for the submitter’s interest in the topic.
  • Optional: Prepare a description of the workshop using a maximum of four pages, suitable for publication in the supplementary conference proceedings on digital format. It should contain a summary of the workshop’s goals and issues. It must be prepared in the MobileHCI2011 Extended Abstracts Format, within the deadline of 1 April, 2011. Note that this document is the only document from the workshop that will be published in the conference proceedings on digital format.
  • Select participants on the basis of papers submitted to them.
  • Send the list of confirmed participants to the Workshops Chairs by May 21st, 2011.
  • Distribute papers and other pre-workshop materials to participants in advance of the workshop.
  • Develop a final agenda of workshop activities.

At the workshop, the organiser is responsible for facilitating discussion, maintaining productive interaction, and encouraging participation. The emphasis should be on group discussion, rather than on presentation of individual papers. Diversity of perspectives should be encouraged.

We will provide the following A/V equipment: projector, screen, 1 flip chart, 1 set of pens, and adhesive for attaching flip chart pages to walls without leaving marks. Regarding wireless availability, network connectivity is available in the facility.

The extended abstract of accepted Workshop proposals will be available in the conference proceedings on digital format. Submission of the final camera-ready version includes and is not complete without giving us permission to distribute your final camera-ready version as described above. This permission is given during the submission of the final version of your work via the conference review system.

Accepted workshop papers (i.e., those of the workshop participants) will NOT be published in the conference proceedings.
